As I wanted to shorten a link to something different than a webpage,
I found out I couldn't; most major shortening services only
allow shortening of HTTP requests. Because of this 2xs.it was born.
About 2xs.it
2xs.it is a link shortener service, created and maintained by Newneon.com (NL).
Unlike other shortener services, 2xs.it allows shortening links of any type, including e-mail, Skype and sms links.
How does it work?
At the home page you specify a so-called scheme (HTTP, FTP, etc) and enter a URL you want to be shortened. After clicking on the button Shorten, the shortened link is created and displayed (selected) at the bottom of the page.
This allows you to shorten long URL's, but also links to - say - Skype or callto. For example:
You want people to be able to contact you directly by phone, but you do not want to show your phone number online (which is quite understandable ;). The solution is simple: go to the main page, select CALLTO from the list of available schemes and then enter your mobile number in the text box.

When sharing your mobile phone number, you may want to mark the checkbox Ask visitors to enter a code.... Otherwise, anybody or anything (including machines) is able to follow your shortlink without verifying they are in fact human.
Click on Shorten and a short link is generated.
Now on to the nice part! Send someone you know the short link you just created, for example as part of a Direct Message in Twitter. What happens when they click on it? Their phone (or PC with Skype installed) is starting a phone call... to you.
